Σε επιφυλακή η Περιφέρεια Στερεάς Ελλάδας

για το κύμα κακοκαιρίας «Ελπίς»

Ο Περιφερειάρχης Στερεάς Ελλάδας Φάνης Σπανός συμμετείχε στην έκτακτη σύσκεψη, την οποία προκάλεσε σήμερα, Παρασκευή 21 Ιανουαρίου 2022, ο Υπουργός Κλιματικής Κρίσης και Πολιτικής Προστασίας Χρήστος Στυλιανίδης για την αντιμετώπιση του επερχόμενου καιρικού φαινομένου «Ελπίς».

Στη σύσκεψη έλαβαν, επίσης, μέρος συναρμόδιοι Υπουργοί, Περιφερειάρχες, εκπρόσωποι του Πυροσβεστικού Σώματος, του Εθνικού Συντονιστικού Κέντρου Επιχειρήσεων και Διαχείρισης Κρίσεων (ΕΣΚΕΔΙΚ), της Ελληνικής Αστυνομίας, καθώς και εκπρόσωποι των παραχωρησιούχων διαχείρισης Εθνικού Οδικού Δικτύου.

Σύμφωνα με τις προβλέψεις της ΕΜΥ, αναμένεται να εκδηλωθούν έντονα καιρικά φαινόμενα με χιονοπτώσεις και ισχυρούς ανέμους, από το μεσημέρι του Σαββάτου 22 Ιανουαρίου έως και την Τρίτη 25 Ιανουαρίου 2022, σε όλη τη Στερεά Ελλάδα.

Για την καλύτερη δυνατή προετοιμασία όλων, ο Περιφερειάρχης Στερεάς Ελλάδας Φάνης Σπανός πραγματοποίησε τηλεδιάσκεψη νωρίτερα σήμερα, με τους χωρικούς Αντιπεριφερειάρχες, τον Περιφερειακό Συντονιστή Πολιτικής Προστασίας Στερεάς Ελλάδας Κωνσταντίνο Καραμπέτσο, τον Διευθυντή Πολιτικής Προστασίας Στερεάς Ελλάδας Πολύζο Ζώη, ενώ παραμένει ανοιχτή η επικοινωνία με τους δήμους της Στερεάς Ελλάδας, καθώς και με τις Περιφερειακές Διευθύνσεις της Αστυνομίας, της Πυροσβεστικής και του ΕΚΑΒ.

Επισημαίνεται ότι έχουν ήδη ενεργοποιηθεί 44 σημεία αποθήκευσης και διάθεσης αλατιού με επαρκείς ποσότητες (5.430 τόνοι άμεσης διαθεσιμότητας), ενώ παραμένουν σε ετοιμότητα 353 εκχιονιστικά μηχανήματα, γκρέιντερ, αλατιέρες, μπουλντόζες και πολυμηχανήματα, τα οποία θα αξιοποιηθούν, όπου παραστεί ανάγκη.

«Ετοιμαζόμαστε για ένα ακόμη βαρύ καιρικό φαινόμενο, το οποίο φαίνεται ότι θα είναι πιο έντονο από την ερχόμενη Δευτέρα. Έχουμε ήδη αναπτύξει μηχανήματα σε επιφυλακή σε όλες τις Περιφερειακές Ενότητες και ιδιαίτερα στα πιο “ευαίσθητα” σημεία και βρισκόμαστε σε διαρκή συνεργασία με την ΕΛ.ΑΣ., την Πυροσβεστική, τη “Νέα Οδό” και φυσικά με τη Γενική Γραμματεία Πολιτικής Προστασίας. Είναι κρίσιμο να ακολουθήσουμε όλοι τις οδηγίες της Πολιτικής Προστασίας και όταν ενταθούν τα φαινόμενα σε κάθε περιοχή, να αποφύγουμε τις άσκοπες μετακινήσεις», δήλωσε ο Περιφερειάρχης Στερεάς Ελλάδας Φάνης Σπανός.

Montreal escaped the first major storm of 2022 with 16 centimetres of snow, but poor driving conditions resulted in a series of collisions involving dozens of vehicles on Montreal-area highways and more snow is yet to come on Wednesday.

The storm began slowly and with deceptive calm in the early hours of Monday, offering a light dusting of snow around 5 a.m.

By 6 a.m., all foreign and domestic flights in and out of the city's airport were either delayed or cancelled in anticipation of the storm.

As the snow intensified, driving conditions were complicated by increasingly strong winds which, with the snowfall, rendered visibility poor on many highways. Motorists were advised to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary.

Montreal-area school boards had announced on Sunday night that elementary and high schools would be closed Monday in anticipation of the storm.

Transports Québec reported numerous lane closures and accidents on its Québec 511 Twitter feed throughout the day. However, it appeared that none of the injuries sustained in the collisions placed anyone's life in danger, according to the Sûreté du Québec.

Among the incidents was an 18-vehicle pileup on eastbound Highway 20 in Boucherville. Four people were transported to hospital with minor injuries, the SQ said.

Quebec Transport Minister François Bonnardel reported a second multi-car pileup on Highway 20 near Beloeil in the Montérégie.

On Highway 30 in St-constant, about 40 vehicles were involved in collisions spread over two sites a few hundred metres apart. Eight people were transported to hospital with minor injuries, the SQ said.

A collision involving 15 vehicles on eastbound Highway 10 in Carignan resulted in no injuries.

The City of Montreal announced it will commence snow removal at 7 a.m. on Tuesday, its second operation of the season. Information on how snow removal is advancing in the city is available online at infoneige.ca and using the Info-neige app.

Canada Post suspended mail delivery in Quebec on Monday.

“Delivery will resume once conditions improve and it's safe to do so. The safety of our employees is our No. 1 priority,” Canada Post said in a statement.

Montreal's public health authority issued a warning to automobile owners to be wary of the danger of carbon monoxide poisoning, urging them to clear their vehicle's tail pipe of snow before turning on the engine.

Wind gusts reached 50 to 60 kilometres per hour in Montreal, but that didn't break any records, said Peter Kimbell, a warning preparedness meteorologist with Environment Canada, as the snow tapered off in the late afternoon.

“That's a good winter snowstorm, but it's a garden-variety snowstorm that basically we've seen many times before,” he said. “Montrealers are used to this kind of thing.”

In contrast, the storm dumped 46 centimetres on Ottawa as of Monday afternoon. The one-day accumulation was more snow than the city has received all winter, Kimbell noted.

Montreal will be back to cold temperatures on Tuesday before seeing five to 10 centimetres of snow on Wednesday. The forecast calls for a high of -9 C on Wednesday, but the temperature could climb higher, Kimbell said.

“It's been a yo-yo winter,” he said, noting temperatures were relatively mild in November and December, and the forecast was for a milder-than-normal winter. “But then the middle of January struck, and everything kind of changed. And it's typical. It's very hard to forecast beyond a couple of weeks or even 10 days. Things change rapidly in the world of weather.”

The average high for Montreal in January is -6 C, and the average low is -15 C.

Montreal has seen below-normal temperatures so far for January, Kimbell said, and almost nothing but cold weather is in store for the rest of the month.
